Robert Edward Auctions (REA) has once again demonstrated its prowess in the vintage sports card market with their recent February auction, which soared past expectations with sales surpassing $1.2 million. The spotlight of this event was undeniably on the sale of a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, fetching an impressive $75,000. This auction not only set a new record for this particular card but also showcased the strong demand for rare vintage sports cards among collectors.
Adding to the excitement, a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series, graded PSA GOOD 2, secured a record-breaking sale of $15,000. The auction drew in a plethora of registry builders and collectors, particularly enticed by the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among them, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the show with a remarkable auction high of $19,200, setting the bar high for non-Hall of Famers in this grade.
Boasting a vast array of 2,732 items up for bidding, REA presented a diverse selection of collectibles that captured the hearts of enthusiasts. Some of the other top sellers included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4, which fetched $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6, sold for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set, going for $12,000, among numerous other notable sales.
