Rare Baseball Cards in Summer Auction

Heritage Auctions is gearing up for an exciting event with their Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction on July 12-13. This auction promises a dazzling array of rare and highly sought-after baseball cards that will captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Among the highlights of this upcoming auction are some truly iconic pieces, including a mint-condition 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card, a gem-mint Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card, and a gem-mint chrome rookie card autographed by a young Bryce Harper. These cards are not just collectibles; they are pieces of sports history that hold immense value and significance in the world of memorabilia.

In addition to these standout items, the auction will also feature sealed packs, boxes, and cases that are bursting with potential hidden gems, making it a must-see for collectors looking to uncover rare treasures. Signed Shohei Ohtani cards and top-notch Ty Cobb tobacco cards further enhance the allure of this summer auction, which boasts a wide range of Hall of Fame memorabilia, including Babe Ruth’s legendary “Called Shot” jersey.

An exceptional highlight of this auction is a remarkable collection of 1959 baseball cards that were once stapled to containers of Canadian cookies. These cards, considered incredibly rare with only 69 known in the PSA population report, feature 37 cards in this event. Among the roster of players showcased on these cards are legends like Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Yogi Berra, to name a few.

The cards from Dad’s Cookies, though possibly unfamiliar to many, hold a special place in the history of sports memorabilia. Joe Orlando, Heritage’s Executive Vice President in Sports, emphasizes the excitement surrounding these cards, noting that they offer a sense of thrill and discovery to collectors, especially due to their rarity and the unique way in which they were distributed.

Dating back to 1959, the Dad’s Cookies cards were originally produced by Exhibits Supply Company, a Chicago-based firm known for creating picture postcards distributed in arcades. The cards, featuring baseball players, boxers, and movie stars, were later used by Dad’s Cookies as promotional items, adding a touch of nostalgia to each bag or box of cookies. The rarity of these cards stems from their distribution method and the limited number of surviving examples, making them highly coveted by collectors.

The auction also includes two highly coveted Ty Cobb T206 cards from the early 1900s. One of these is the El Principe de Gales Ty Cobb, graded PSA NM 7, which stands out for its rarity with only one known example bearing the El Principe de Gales advertisement on the back. The other card, the American Beauty Portrait-Red Cobb, graded PSA EX-MT 6, is hailed as the finest-known example of its kind, adding to its desirability among collectors.

In addition to these iconic pieces, collectors will have the opportunity to explore sealed boxes and cases, such as the 1970 Topps Baseball Wax Box (1st & 3rd Series) with 24 unopened packs potentially containing cards of legendary players like Carl Yastrzemski, Vida Blue, and Roberto Clemente. These items not only hold nostalgic value but also offer the excitement of discovering hidden treasures within each pack, adding an element of surprise to the collecting experience.

The auction also features newer boxes and cases, like the 2015 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Unopened Case and the 2020 Panini Flawless Football Factory Sealed Case, providing collectors with the prospect of finding rare gems such as Connor McDavid rookie cards or gem-mint rookie patch autos. The thrill of uncovering these hidden treasures adds an element of excitement to the collecting process, drawing in enthusiasts who enjoy the thrill of the hunt.

With an exceptional lineup of rare baseball cards, sealed boxes, and cases, Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction promises to be an unforgettable event for sports memorabilia enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a novice looking to delve into the world of sports cards, this auction offers a unique opportunity to acquire some of the rarest and most valuable pieces of memorabilia in existence.
