REA’s June Encore Auction unveiled a treasure trove of remarkable finds as collectors vied for top-quality graded sets and vintage gems. The auction, boasting 3,278 lots, captivated bidders with a mix of complete sets and coveted individual cards, ultimately raking in over $1.7 million from an impressive 67,300 bids.
Among the cream of the crop were complete graded sets that took center stage, with six full sets making it into the top ten items sold. The Topps Baseball complete sets from 1963, 1960, and 1961 emerged as the top three sellers, commanding hefty prices of $75,000, $66,000, and $54,000 respectively. These sets, renowned in the PSA Set Registry, are coveted pieces sought after by collectors for their rarity and pristine condition. Not far behind were complete sets from 1950 Bowman, 1964 Topps, and 1965 Topps Baseball, each fetching a notable $37,200.
A standout moment in the auction was the sale of a 1970-1971 Topps Basketball #160 Jerry West PSA GEM MINT 10 card, one of only two in existence graded at this remarkable level, which sold for $54,000, setting a new record for the card across all grades. This sale carried special resonance following the recent passing of the legendary Basketball Hall of Famer, Jerry West, who left an enduring legacy both on and off the court.
The auction further saw impressive sales of iconic vintage cards, including the 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #30 Ty Cobb graded SGC FAIR 1.5 fetching $38,400, setting a new record for its grade. The 1957 Topps #95 Mickey Mantle graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 also commanded the same price, highlighting the enduring allure of baseball legends. Noteworthy mentions also include a 1980-1981 Topps Basketball Unopened Wax Box featuring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson’s Rookie Year, sold for $18,600, and the 1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth graded PSA VG+ 3.5, which fetched $16,200.
REA President Brian Dwyer expressed his satisfaction with the auction results, citing the strong performance of graded sets and the unwavering demand for vintage rarities.
