Heritage Auctions has unveiled a remarkable collection of autographed vintage sports photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction. Sports card enthusiasts and collectors have the unique opportunity to acquire rare images capturing iconic moments in sports history, complete with the athletes’ signatures.

One of the standout pieces in the auction is a 1948 photo of basketball legend George Mikan, featuring him in action mirroring his famous 1948 Bowman rookie card. This 8×10 Type 1 photo, adorned with Mikan’s signature in blue ink, is expected to attract bids exceeding $20,000, making it a coveted item for sports memorabilia collectors.

The theme of signed vintage photos continues with other notable items in the auction. A late 1940s photograph of Cleveland Browns legend Otto Graham, reminiscent of his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, also showcases his autograph. Similarly, a 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat for winning the National League batting title, accompanied by a heartfelt inscription to “Jeff,” adds a personal touch to this significant piece of sports history.

Another compelling photo features Robinson in 1957, clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field as he retired from baseball. The image captures poignant details such as his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, along with two bats, one of which belonged to Gil Hodges. This piece is anticipated to draw substantial interest, with bids projected to surpass $10,000.

The auction also includes a photo believed to be the source for Willie Mays’ iconic 1952 Topps card, complete with Mays’ signature on the front, likely signed in the 1990s. This rare and collectible piece offers fans the chance to own a part of baseball history immortalized in a vintage image.

With over 150 vintage photographs featured in the online catalog, dating back over a century, the auction offers a diverse array of sports memorabilia. Noteworthy inclusions are a photo from the 1919 World Series capturing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shaking hands before a fateful game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This historic image, accompanied by original paper caption and stamps on the back, is expected to commence bidding at $8,000.

The auction also showcases rookie photos of iconic athletes such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970). Additionally, sports fans can explore various images of baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, along with other pre-war sports icons, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the rich history of sports photography.

Running until June 13, the Icons Photography Auction presents collectors and sports enthusiasts with a rare opportunity to own a piece of sports heritage captured through the lens of time. Engage with the nostalgia and significance of these vintage images, each telling a compelling story of sports legends and their enduring impact on athletic history.
